China Has Played an Active Role in Addressing Climate Change

Ø China Strives to promote international negotiation

China has been actively engaged in negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, upholding the principle and framework of the convention, and promoting its comprehensive, effective and sustainable implementation. In 2015, China was one of the first developing countries that formulated an Independent Contribution document and submitted it to the UN. President Xi Jinping attended the Climate Conference in Paris and delivered an important speech to explain Chinese plans to address climate change.

Ø China has been actively engaged in other multilateral diplomatic activities

Chinese leaders have been actively engaged in multilateral diplomatic activities and have delivered important speeches to promote multilateral progress on addressing climate change. In September, both Chinese and American presidents submitted legal documents that stated they would join the Paris Agreement. This is a positive signal for the international society, showing that China will shoulder its share of the responsibility.

Ø The whole society is committed to reducing greenhouse gases

The Chinese government has paid great attention to climate change. In June 2007, the State Council issued China’s National Plan for Tackling Climate Change. On 30 June 2016, China submitted Enhanced Actions on Climate Change: China’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions to the Secretariat of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. China is committed to optimizing its energy mix, developing renewable energy, promoting energy-saving products and technology, developing a circular economy, and increasing forest and grassland carbon sink. China is committed to enhancing its ability to tackle climate change, and has set up low-carbon pilot areas on a provincial, city, town and community level. China has strengthened technology support for tackling climate change, accelerated the research and application of low carbon technology, and achieved important results in addressing climate change. All of these testify to the fact that China has been actively participating in global governance, building a shared future for mankind, and shouldering the responsibility of promoting the common development of mankind.
