Activities Forecast of World Earth Day 2024 in Tianzhushan UNESCO Global Geopark
04/20/2024

April 22, 2024 is the 55th World Earth Day, and the theme of this year's Earth Day is "Planet vs. Plastics". In order to thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, publicize Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, guide the whole society to establish the concept of ecological civilization of "respecting nature, conforming to nature, and protecting nature", promote the construction of beautiful Qianshan, and jointly build an earth home where man and nature coexist in harmony, Tianzhushan Global Geopark, Anqing Qianshan Ecological Environment Branch and Qianshan Pailou Central Primary School jointly carried out the 55th "World Earth Day" and the 5th Asia-Pacific Geopark Week Science Popularization Campaign. In the form of museum-school cooperation and joint construction and common benefit, Tianzhushan Geopark will give full play to the social education function of the museum and jointly build a "second classroom" for popular science education.

Tianzhushan UGGp is Making Relentless Efforts to Combat Climate Change
Pubdate:3/16/2023 ThursdayCategory:Geopark News

In response to climate change, Tianzhushan UNESCO Global Geopark has done a lot of work in daily forestry management and protection, implementation of forestry projects, utilization of clean energy  (construction of photovoltaic power stations), science education and creating a green transportation system, actively preventing forest fires and enhancing the productivity of forest stands, while reducing carbon emissions in terms of energy use, contributing to the response to climate change, concluded as follows:

I. Daily Management and Protection

1. Fire prevention

To effectively prevent and control the occurrence of forest fires, Tianzhushan UGGp employs more than 100 volunteers and maintainers to patrol the geopark around the clock and invests more than 2 million yuan in additional fire prevention equipment, greatly enhancing the geopark's fire prevention capability. The geopark has actively carried out theoretical and practical training on forest fire safety and emergency handling to build up a forest safety line.

2. Prevention and control of forestry pests

In recent years, the geopark has invested more than 1 million yuan in the prevention and control of forest pests, promptly reducing the population density of pests such as Cenopalpus linepla, Acantholyda posticalis Matsumura, and Dendrolimus punctatus Walker, avoiding a major outbreak of forestry pests, maintaining the ecological balance and effectively protecting the  forest resources of Tianzhushan UGGp.

II. Implementation of Forestry Projects

In recent years, through the implementation of a series of forestry projects, the forest resources of Tianzhushan UGGp have been effectively protected and the ability of the forest stands to resist natural disasters has been enhanced.

1. Biodiversity project

The project is a German aid loan project, with a total investment of 18.3 million euros, of which the Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KWF, German Bank for Reconstruction and Development) provided a 15 million euro project loan. The project mainly includes the restoration of the geopark's forest and wetland ecosystems and biodiversity monitoring projects.

The project has implemented the forest phase transformation (including the replanting and transforming of the undergrowth of Pinus massoniana Lamb., the selective felling of Pinus massoniana Lamb., the forest phase transformation of 100 hectares of firs and afforestation of 33 hectares of Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and the construction of fire prevention forest belts (including the fire prevention forest belts of Schima superbaGardn. et Champ. and Camellia oleifera Abel), which have further enhanced the stability of the forest stands and significantly improved the ecological and economic benefits of the forest stands.

2. Medium and young forest nurturing inter-logging project

In order to enhance the stability of forest stands and improve their productivity, a total of 3 million yuan has been invested in fostering inter-logging for 30,000 mu times in recent years.

3. Degraded Forest Rehabilitation Project

In order to improve the productivity of forest stands, Tianzhushan UGGp has invested a total of 1 million yuan in recent years to rehabilitate degraded forests with low productivity. As a result of the renovation, the productivity of the forest stands has increased significantly.

4. Tree Planting

Every year, Tianzhushan UGGp organizes compulsory tree planting activities to further green and beautify the geopark and to protect and improve the ecological environment.

III. Construction of Photovoltaic Power Stations

In order to effectively reduce carbon emission, actively respond to climate change, and improve air quality, Tianzhushan UGGp has promoted the construction of clean energy photovoltaic power stations in recent years.  which produce are clear energy. At present, 51 photovoltaic power stations have been built in the geopark, with 6,000 kilowatts of electricity connected to the grid.

IV. Science Education

Tianzhushan has built a Geopark Museum, which visualises the ecosystems of different zones of Tianzhushan through the display of plant and animal specimens and large ecological scenes to educate the general public on science.

Tianzhushan UGGp has organized many climate change exhibitions and science lectures, and prepared climate change folders to make its contribution to addressing climate change.

V. Building a green transportation system

Tianzhushan UGGp is actively promoting the construction of public leisure facilities such as tourist scenic roads, urban greenways and cycling trails, laying cycling trails in the southern part of the geopark, opening shuttle bus lines in the northern part of the geopark and advocating the use of clean energy vehicles to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

In conclusion, Tianzhushan UGGp has eliminated the occurrence of major fires in the geopark, increased the productivity of forest stands and protected the forest resources through daily management, forestry projects, the use of clean energy, science education and the creation of green transportation, while actively using clean energy to reduce carbon emissions and effectively combat climate change.
