April 22, 2024 is the 55th World Earth Day, and the theme of this year's Earth Day is "Planet vs. Plastics". In order to thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, publicize Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, guide the whole society to establish the concept of ecological civilization of "respecting nature, conforming to nature, and protecting nature", promote the construction of beautiful Qianshan, and jointly build an earth home where man and nature coexist in harmony, Tianzhushan Global Geopark, Anqing Qianshan Ecological Environment Branch and Qianshan Pailou Central Primary School jointly carried out the 55th "World Earth Day" and the 5th Asia-Pacific Geopark Week Science Popularization Campaign. In the form of museum-school cooperation and joint construction and common benefit, Tianzhushan Geopark will give full play to the social education function of the museum and jointly build a "second classroom" for popular science education.
In Jan. 27th, a donation ceremony of dinosaur egg fossils was carried out in Tianzhushan Geopark Museum.
Two dinosaur eggs fossils were donated. Both were discovered in Baoling Village, Huangpu Town, Qianshan City. One is almost round in shape, covered with a layer of brown sandstone. Its diameter is about 11cm, with the eggshell about 1mm thick. The other one is incomplete, hollow and filled with calcite crystals. Their surfaces are seriously weathered with a few cracks.
In more than 40 fossil sites in Qianshan Basin, 62 species of Paleocene vertebrate fossils have been unearthed. This is the first time in the history of Qianshan Basin to discover dinosaur egg fossils, which are of Mesozoic era. The egg fossils provide important fossil evidence for studying the biological and environmental evolution history of the middle and late Mesozoic in Qianshan Basin, and provide direct basis for regional biostratigraphic correlation. Both are also of great significance to enrich the geological relics of Tianzhushan UGGp.
In recent years, Tianzhushan UGGp attaches great importance to the scientific research on paleontology and fossil protection. Under the support of higher authorities, it has spent nearly eighty million yuan over the implementation of Paleocene mammalian fossils protection program, focused on implementing investigation and research of the paleontological fossil resources, protection and construction of fossils sites, specimen protection, science popularization, development and utilization. The protection of paleontological fossils in the park has been effective.
