On June 20,
2024, the 20th anniversary of the development of China’s Global
Geoparks was held in Beijing, reviewing the 20-year development history of
China's Global Geoparks, exchanging good practices and experiences in the
management and sustainable development of Global Geoparks, and arranging key
work of the next stage. A representative of Tianzhushan Geopark participated in
the event.
The Global
Geoparks bring together the miraculous creation of nature over hundreds of
millions of years, carrying the accumulation of history, human wisdom and
social progress. China currently has 47 global geoparks, ranking first in the
world, distributed in 23 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and the
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The core concept of global geoparks is
to promote sustainable social and economic development through the protection
of geological heritage with international value, the use of unique natural
relics and cultural heritage resources in the region. The Global Geoparks have
become an important field in the construction of ecological civilization in
China, a vivid practice of the concept that lucid waters and lush mountains are
invaluable assets, and an important carrier for the global dissemination of Xi
Jinping's thought on ecological civilization.
Over the past 20
years, China has become an important force in the Global Geoparks Network to
showcase China's unique geological landscape, promote popular science education
and ecological protection, and promote local social and economic development,
and has made a series of remarkable achievements. First, the geological
landscape protection has made remarkable achievements, with 47 global geoparks
effectively protecting unique geological heritage and natural landscapes, and
China has become one of the most successful and effective countries in the
implementation of the global global geoparks plan. Second, the management
system is becoming more and more perfect, with China participating in the joint
initiation of the creation of the Global Geoparks Network, the UNESCO Global
Geoparks Network Office in Beijing, China, and the introduction of the Global
Geoparks Management Measures in 2024. Third, regional development has played a
significant driving role, and a mature model of protection and utilization that
conforms to local conditions and shows local characteristics has been
successfully explored, effectively promoting a large number of remote areas to
transform resource advantages into "golden keys" to stimulate local
economic growth. Fourth, the capacity building of science popularization has
achieved outstanding results, fully performing the function of science
popularization, and on the basis of protecting precious and beautiful
geological heritage and rare and diverse ecological landscapes, a rich variety
of activities such as science popularization, research and eco-tourism have
been carried out, so that more people can understand the earth and the problems
facing the world. Fifth, more than 30 experts and managers from China have
successively entered the UNESCO Global Geoparks Evaluation Team, widely
participated in the affairs of international organizations and institutions
such as the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council and the Executive Board of the
Global Geoparks Network, and continued to promote international exchanges and
cooperation through the establishment of sister relations with other foreign
Global Geoparks.
In the future,
China will actively explore the management system and development model of
global geoparks in line with the actual conditions of various places, and
promote the realization of systematic protection, differentiated development,
integrated utilization and integrated management. China will further explore
the high-quality natural resources of the Global Geoparks, and promote its
creative transformation and innovative development, coordinate and plan the
improvement of people's livelihood and community development, create favorable
conditions for the production, life and employment of local people, and truly
realize the organic unity of ecological protection, people's livelihood
improvement and green development; At the same time, China will continue to
promote China's Global Geoparks to the world, tell the "Chinese stories"
of Global Geoparks, and make new and greater contributions to the development
of Global Geoparks.
