China University of Geosciences (CUG), founded in 1952, is a national key university affiliated with the Ministry of Education. It is also listed in the National “211 Project” and the “Double First-rate Plan”. It is Located in the Wuhan East Lake National Innovation Demonstration Zone. CUG has two campuses in Wuhan, the Nanwangshan Campus and Future City Campus. CUG, with geosciences as its major subject, is a comprehensive university that also offers a variety of degree programs in science, engineering, literature, management, economics, law, education and the arts. Its two first-level disciplines, geology and geological resources & engineering, have both been selected as national first-rate disciplines.
The School of Earth Sciences traces its roots back to the Department of Mineral Geology and Exploration established in November 1952 under the name Beijing Geological Institute. In 1995, the former Department of Geology, Department of Geochemistry and Department of Geomechanics were merged to form the School of Geosciences. Currently, the school consists of several departments, including Earth Material Science, Geochemistry, Geobiology, Tectonic Geology and Geodynamics, and Earth Surface System Science. Additionally, it houses research and teaching units such as the Institute of Planetary Science, the Global Geotectonics Center, the Big Data Research Center of Solid Earth Science, and the Experimental Teaching Center. The School of Earth Sciences serves as a national hub for fundamental scientific research and the cultivation of teaching talents in the field of geology.
The School of Earth Sciences is dedicated for scientific education and research on geological sciences. It is supported by the“985”Platform for National Disciplines and the“211 Project”for key discipline construction initiated by the Ministry of Education, and its geosciences is ranked as the top 1‰ in the ESI Global Institutional rankings. The school encompasses a national key discipline in geology, as well as secondary key disciplines in paleontology and stratigraphy, mineralogy and petrology, geochemistry, tectonic geology, and quaternary geology. It offers first-level master's and doctoral programs in geology, and hosts a postdoctoral research station in the field.
There are over 700 undergraduate students, 700 master's students and 300 doctoral students in school of earth science.
The school's faculty comprises 149 members, including 59 professors and 45 associate professors. Among them are 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, and 22 other high-level national talents. Over the years, the school has produced more than 10,000 graduates, including prominent figures such as former Premier Wen Jiabao and the chief scientist of China’s Lunar Exploration Project Ouyangziyuan and other 25 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
